Portable power and solar generators
Is a "Solar Power Station" Something You Can Buy, or a Power Plant?
Summary
Both, which is why the search results are a mix. In the utility sense a solar power station is a generating plant: fields of panels feeding the grid. In the retail sense it is a portable power station, a battery with an inverter and outlets, sold with a folding solar panel; the makers call that combination a solar generator. Jackery's own definition is the clearest: a portable power station stores electricity, and a solar generator is a portable power station bundled with solar panels, sold as a bundle that may have a different SKU. If you are shopping, the three numbers that matter are watt-hours stored, AC watts out, and the solar input's watts and voltage window.
The two meanings
| Phrase as searched | What it usually means | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|
| solar power station, solar energy power station | a utility-scale plant, or loosely, a portable power station with panels | news about plants; product pages for the latter |
| solar panel station, solar generator | a portable power station sold with one or more folding panels | product bundles |
| portable power station | the battery-and-inverter box on its own | product pages |
On this site the same split is in the shelf names: "Solar Generators (Station + Panel)" for bundles, "Portable Power Stations" for the box alone, and "Portable Solar Panels" for the panel alone.
What is actually in the box
Jackery sells the Explorer 1000 v2 on its own and as the Solar Generator 1000 v2 with one 200 W panel; EcoFlow sells the DELTA 3 the same two ways. The station is identical. A manufacturer bundle may include the intended panel and cable, but check the exact contents and compatibility; buying separately lets you pick a larger or lighter panel, as long as it fits the input window, which our pairing guide explains.
The three numbers to read first
- Watt-hours: how much it stores. 288 Wh runs phones and lights overnight; about 1 kWh runs a refrigerator for 7 to 14 hours by EcoFlow's figure; a full-day refrigerator budget needs measured Wh/day and conversion losses, as explained in our outage guide.
- AC watts: what it can run at once. 300 W excludes kitchen appliances; 1,800 W covers most of them; 240 V loads need a station or approved paired system that explicitly supplies 240 V; battery kWh alone does not determine voltage.
- Solar input: the ceiling in watts and the voltage window. A panel that fits one station's window may not fit another's; our input-ceiling guide lists them.
What it is not
A rooftop system. A portable power station does not connect to the house wiring unless a transfer panel is installed, and a grid-tied rooftop array does not become backup by adding one; our guide on connecting a power station to the house covers both routes.
