What Happens to Voltage and Current When Two 430 W Panels Are Wired in Series or in Parallel?
Summary
In series the voltage doubles and the current stays at one panel's value; in parallel the voltage stays at one panel's value and the current doubles. Either way the pair is 860 W. Using the 430 W class of the Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2+, series gives 65.88 V at 13.05 A at maximum power and parallel gives 32.94 V at 26.10 A. Open-circuit voltage climbs on cold mornings, so the input voltage limit of the receiving equipment sets how many panels can go in series.
The datasheet numbers, combined
Victron's wiring guide "Wiring Unlimited" puts the rule plainly: in a series circuit the current is the same everywhere and the voltages add; in a parallel circuit the voltage is the same and the currents add. Single-panel values are from the datasheet at STC (1,000 W/m², 25°C).
| Layout | Voltage at max power | Current at max power | Open-circuit voltage | Short-circuit current |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One panel | 32.94 V | 13.05 A | 39.32 V | 13.74 A |
| Two in series | 65.88 V | 13.05 A | 78.64 V | 13.74 A |
| Two in parallel | 32.94 V | 26.10 A | 39.32 V | 27.48 A |
The parallel pair pushes twice the current through the wire, connectors, and input. The series pair keeps the current and raises the voltage.
How much the voltage rises in the cold
The datasheet gives an open-circuit voltage temperature coefficient of −0.24% per °C, so voltage goes up as temperature goes down. With the cells at −10°C, 35°C below the rating point, one panel's open-circuit voltage rises from 39.32 V to about 42.6 V.
| Panels in series | Voc at 25°C | Voc at −10°C |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 78.6 V | 85.2 V |
| 3 | 118.0 V | 127.9 V |
| 4 | 157.3 V | 170.5 V |
Victron says the first number in its charge controller model names is the maximum PV open-circuit voltage. Against a model carrying "150," four in series is already over at 25°C. The actual series limit for any pairing is set by the panel and equipment manufacturers' specifications; this site does not rule on compatibility.
