Do Higher-Efficiency Solar Panels Produce More Energy?
Summary
Per square foot of roof, yes: higher efficiency packs more watts into the same space. Annual kilowatt-hours, though, depend on how many watts you install and on sunlight, orientation, shade, and heat, so a panel that is one point more efficient won't automatically out-produce another over a year. On hot roofs, the temperature coefficient can matter as much as the efficiency rating.
Efficiency is an area measurement
DOE defines conversion efficiency as the percentage of the solar energy shining on a PV device that is converted into usable electricity. Fraunhofer ISE's 2026 report puts the weighted average for crystalline silicon modules at 22.7% in the fourth quarter of 2024. The Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ reaches 22.5% and the REC Alpha Pure-RX 22.6%, both close to that average.
On a small roof, that difference sets how many kilowatts fit. With room to spare, a few more lower-efficiency panels reach the same capacity.
Heat
Solar cells work best when they're cool. According to DOE, higher temperatures produce a slight increase in current but a much larger decrease in voltage. The temperature coefficient tells you how fast output drops: -0.29% per degree Celsius for the Qcells module and -0.24% for the REC. At a cell temperature of 50°C, 25 degrees above the rating condition, that is roughly a 7.3% loss for the Qcells panel and 6.0% for the REC.
Datasheet watts and efficiency are measured at 1,000 W/m² and 25°C. Cells on a summer roof run much hotter than that, which is where a smaller coefficient pays off even between panels with the same efficiency.
