How Big Is a Residential Solar Panel?
Summary
There's no standard size, but current residential modules run a little over 67 inches long and about 44 to 48 inches wide. The Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ measures 67.8 by 44.6 inches and tops out at 440 W, while the REC Alpha Pure-RX measures 68.0 by 47.4 inches (22.4 square feet) and reaches 470 W. Most of that wattage gap comes from the extra area, not higher efficiency.
Two panels side by side
The two are almost the same length, but the REC is about 2.8 inches wider, which gives it roughly 6% more surface. Its top rating is about 7% higher, and the maximum efficiencies are 22.5% for Qcells and 22.6% for REC. The bigger number on the REC mostly reflects a bigger panel. Both are 1.2 inches thick or less, and they weigh 46.7 lb (Qcells) and 50.0 lb (REC).
From roof area to panel count
Dividing roof area by panel area gives an upper limit and nothing more. Ridges, valleys, vents, skylights, and chimneys take space, and heavily shaded sections usually get skipped. The real count comes from laying out actual module dimensions on each roof plane.
