Why Do Some Solar Panels Go Past 500W?
Summary
Mostly because they are bigger. Canadian Solar's BiHiKu6 (CS6W-MB-AG) runs from 520 to 550 W on a 2,266 × 1,134 mm frame, about 2.57 m², and weighs 32.2 kg. That works out to about 202 to 214 W per square meter, close to the roughly 204 W of Qcells' residential Q.PEAK DUO BLK ML-G10+ at 400 W.
Next to a 400 W residential module
| Spec | Canadian Solar CS6W-550MB-AG | Qcells Q.PEAK DUO BLK ML-G10+ 400 W |
|---|---|---|
| Rating | 550 W | 400 W |
| Dimensions | 2,266 × 1,134 × 35 mm | 1,879 × 1,045 × 32 mm |
| Weight | 32.2 kg | 22.0 kg |
| Current at max power (Imp) | 13.20 A | 10.77 A |
| Open-circuit voltage (Voc) | 49.6 V | 45.30 V |
| Intended use per maker | Utility power plants, tracker-compatible | Residential rooftops |
The 550 W panel delivers 1.38 times the rating on about 1.31 times the area and 1.46 times the weight. At 2.27 m long it runs 39 cm past the 400 W module.
The CS6W-MB-AG is bifacial, and its datasheet lists what the 550 W model reaches with rear-side gain: 605 W at 10% and 660 W at 20%. How much light reaches the back depends on the installation.
Built for a different job
Canadian Solar describes the series as a cost-effective product for utility power plants that works with mainstream trackers. Its current is also higher than the Qcells residential module's, and whether an inverter or racking system can take it is set by those manufacturers' specifications. The datasheet we reviewed is dated March 2023.
