What Is the Tesla Powerwall 3 AC Rating?
Summary
It depends on how it was installed. Tesla's datasheet lists four nominal AC output ratings for Powerwall 3, 5.8 kW, 7.6 kW, 10 kW and 11.5 kW, at 24, 31.7, 41.7 and 48 A of maximum continuous current, and the installer sets one to match the breaker and conductors. Off-grid, a unit configured at 11.5 kW can be enabled for 15.4 kW of continuous discharge if it is installed with an 80 A breaker. The battery's energy is 13.5 kWh in every case, and its motor-start capability is 185 LRA regardless of the rating.
The ratings on the datasheet
| Nominal output power (AC) | 5.8 kW | 7.6 kW | 10 kW | 11.5 kW |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum apparent power | 5,800 VA | 7,600 VA | 10,000 VA | 11,500 VA |
| Maximum continuous current | 24 A | 31.7 A | 41.7 A | 48 A |
Configurable maximum continuous discharge off-grid: 15.4 kW, available only if the on-grid rating is 11.5 kW; if enabled, Powerwall 3 must be installed with an 80 A breaker and appropriately sized conductors.
The other AC figures on the sheet
- Charging from AC: up to 5 kW (20.8 A) for a Powerwall 3 alone, up to 8 kW (33.3 A) with up to three expansion units.
- Load start: 185 LRA.
- Maximum output fault current: 160 A for one second.
- Power factor: 0 to 1, configurable by grid code.
Why the number on your system may be lower than 11.5 kW
The rating is a configuration, and a 60 A circuit is what 11.5 kW implies; a home whose panel or service cannot take that gets a lower setting. The energy stored does not change, only how much of it can be delivered at once. Our guide on the four ratings explains what each one does and does not run; our solar-input guide covers the DC side, 20 kW across six MPPTs.
