Can You Install a Home Battery Without Solar Panels?

Summary

It depends on the manufacturer. Tesla's Powerwall support page has a section titled "Without Solar" that describes charging from the grid when rates are low, discharging when they are high, and backing up the home in an outage. Enphase's storage compatibility table lists three configurations, and every one includes solar.

What a battery does without solar

Tesla says that where electricity rates vary through the day, Powerwall charges when utility power is cheap and discharges when it is expensive. When it detects a grid outage it becomes the home's main power source automatically. The section names no model, and the same page describes Powerwall 3 and Powerwall+ as designed for owners installing a new solar and storage system. FranklinWH describes the aPower 2 as storing energy from solar, the grid, a generator, and an EV.

Tesla also says the ability to charge from the grid is set by the local utility or the installer. Where the utility prevents it, or the system is leased, the app shows "Grid Charging Restricted." In the U.S., Tesla adds, the setting is there to follow Investment Tax Credit guidance that assumes Powerwall charges 100% from solar.

When an outage runs long

The Department of Energy's resilience page says rooftop panels alone are not enough to make a home resilient; they need a properly configured inverter and a storage system. Its description of keeping power on through a long outage, even at night, is written about "solar and its associated energy storage." A battery with no solar behind it falls outside that description once the charge it held before the outage is used up.
