Can Enphase IQ8 Microinverters Power a House in a Daytime Outage With No Battery?

Summary

Enphase says that with IQ8 and IQ9 microinverters, "your lights, fans, and phones can stay powered even during a daytime grid outage, with or without a battery." It calls this Sunlight Backup. The microinverters on the roof do not do it alone: the IQ8X data sheet notes that producing power while the grid is down meets UL 1741 "only when installed with IQ System Controller 2 or 3."

The IQ System Controller 3/3G data sheet, dated August 19, 2024, says the unit "can be used for Sunlight Backup, Home Essentials Backup, or Full Energy Independence." The same document describes a System Shutdown Switch that acts as a rapid shutdown initiator for grid-forming IQ8 microinverters, and the IQ Load Controller, which helps prioritize essential appliances during an outage. The controller carries a warranty of up to 10 years.

The battery-free examples Enphase gives are a daytime outage and small loads like lights, fans, and phones. We found nothing on its pages describing what happens when heavy clouds roll in late in the day or when the outage runs into the night.

Adding IQ8 units to an older IQ7 roof

If a house already has IQ7 microinverters and the new panels get IQ8, the answer depends on which document you read. The IQ System Controller 3 data sheet from August 2024 says Enphase does not support mixing IQ8 with other series on the same IQ Gateway. The IQ8X data sheet, revised in August 2025 with updated backward-compatibility information, allows IQ8 to join an existing IQ7 system in two configurations only: solar only, or solar plus an IQ Battery 3/10 or 5P, with backup requiring an IQ System Controller 3/3G/3M and an IQ Meter Collar.

A mixed IQ7/IQ8 system gives up IQ8-specific features such as PCS and Sunlight Jump Start. Going the other way, adding IQ7 units to an IQ8 site on the same gateway, is not possible.
