How Much Does a Home Battery Cost Once It Is Installed?

EnergySage's quote data put a 13.5 kWh battery at about $15,650 before incentives, or $1,159 per kWh (updated August 26, 2026). The per-kWh price varies by brand: Tesla averaged $967 and Enphase $1,429. The federal residential clean energy credit (25D) does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

In the state table, California comes in at $1,079 per kWh and Texas at $1,059. The same page gives about $34,000 for whole-home backup and says equipment typically accounts for 50 to 60% of the price.
Why 13.5 kWh
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reports a median residential storage capacity of 13.5 kWh in 2025, the size of one Tesla Powerwall. The share of home solar installs that included a battery rose from 25% in 2024 to 37% in 2025. For cash purchases, median prices were $2.1/W higher for solar plus storage than for solar alone; applied to 7.7 kW, the 2025 median system size, that is about $16,170. About 80% of the price data behind that difference comes from California.
The tax credit
The IRS says 25D covered battery storage of at least 3 kWh, but the credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. EnergySage likewise says the federal credit is no longer available for residential batteries and points to state and utility incentives.
