What Limits a Home Battery and a Portable Generator During an Outage?

A generator is limited by fuel and by where it can safely run; a battery is limited by its stored charge and by sunlight to refill it. DOE points out that stored solar power needs no fuel deliveries, unlike diesel generators, which are the most common source of emergency backup. For portable generators, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to run them outdoors only, at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, because the exhaust carries lethal carbon monoxide.
The generator's limit is placement
In a May 27, 2026 warning ahead of hurricane season, CPSC named portable generators as one of the leading causes of post-storm carbon monoxide deaths. The gas is colorless and odorless and can kill within minutes, often before people recognize symptoms. CPSC's rule is never to run a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed area, even with doors or windows open, and outdoors to point the exhaust away from windows, doors, and vents.
For buyers, CPSC suggests looking for a carbon monoxide shut-off feature and for models certified to PGMA G300-2023 and UL 2201-2023. UL 2201 models also emit less carbon monoxide to begin with. Inside the house, it recommends working CO and smoke alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, battery-operated or with battery backup.
The battery's limit is the charge it has
DOE writes that in a long outage, solar and its storage can keep delivering power to homes even at night. Panels alone cannot do it; they need a properly configured inverter and a storage system. There is no refueling, though. Tesla says that if a Powerwall is below 5% when the grid goes down, the home loses power at once, and the battery holds what remains until solar recharges it the next morning.
