Orion XS 50 A, 70 A or 1400: Picking a Victron DC-DC Charger From the Battery's Charge Limit
Summary
Start with what the battery accepts, not with what the alternator can give. Victron's Lithium NG 100 Ah charges at 100 A maximum, so either the Orion XS 12/12-50A (700 W) or the 12/12-70A (1,000 W) fits; the Lithium Smart 100 Ah allows 200 A, so any of the three, including the 1,400 W Orion XS 1400, is within its limit. At 50 A, putting 80 Ah back takes about 1.6 hours of driving; at 70 A, about 1.1 hours. All three detect a running engine, work with Euro 5 and 6 smart alternators, and are chargers only, not bidirectional.
The three models
| Orion XS 12/12-50A | Orion XS 12/12-70A | Orion XS 1400 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output | 50 A, 700 W | 70 A, 1,000 W | 1,400 W; 12 V and 24 V mixed-voltage model |
| Efficiency | up to 98.5% | up to 98.5% | up to 98.5% |
| Engine detection | built in; no charging with the engine off | same | same |
| Smart alternators | works with Euro 5 or 6 alternators | same | same |
| Thermal | full output to 40 °C | same | same |
| Other | IP65, VE.Direct, VE.Smart Networking, parallel capable | same | same |
Figures are from Victron's product family page on October 4, 2026; it does not list weight or cable sizes, and we do not add them.
Match it to the battery's maximum charge current
| Battery | Max charge current | Largest Orion XS within it |
|---|---|---|
| Lithium NG 12.8 V/100 Ah | 100 A | 12/12-70A |
| Lithium NG 12.8 V/150 Ah | 150 A | any, including 1400 at 12 V output |
| Lithium Smart 12.8 V/100 Ah | 200 A | any |
| Lithium Smart 12.8 V/200 Ah | 400 A | any |
Two chargers in parallel double the output, and the same battery limit applies to the sum. A 50 A unit on a 100 Ah battery charges at 0.5C, which is well inside every battery here.
Hours of driving to refill
| Charger | 80 Ah returned (80% of 100 Ah) | 160 Ah returned (80% of 200 Ah) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 A | about 1.6 hours | about 3.2 hours |
| 70 A | about 1.1 hours | about 2.3 hours |
Simple division; the charger tapers near full and delivers nothing while the battery is below its 5 °C charge window, so cold mornings add to these times.
Where this fits with solar and shore power
Our earlier guide lays out all three charging routes with one Victron product each; this one is only about choosing the DC-DC size. The alternator's own rating is the remaining check, and it is on the vehicle, not in Victron's data.
