Does the Wattage in an Off-Grid Solar Kit's Name Tell You What You Are Buying?
Summary
No, as two 12 V kits from Renogy show. The 200W Essential Kit's package list has two panels, a PWM charge controller, and cabling, with no battery or inverter on it. The 400W Complete Kit adds two 100 Ah batteries, a 2,000 W inverter, and fuses. The number in the name is the panel total; how long the lights stay on at night and how many watts can run at once depend on the battery and inverter.

The Complete Kit also comes in a lithium version with two self-heating 12 V 100 Ah lithium batteries. Its package list drops the battery monitor.
The controller sets the ceiling for adding panels
The Essential Kit's Adventurer spec table lists a maximum PV input of 25 VDC and 400 W at 12 V. With 200 W already in the box, that leaves 200 W of headroom on paper.
The Rover 40A in the Complete Kit is rated, per Renogy's FAQ, for 40 A of PV input current, 100 VDC maximum PV voltage, and 520 W of solar input on a 12 V system or 1,040 W on 24 V. A 400 W kit on a 12 V battery bank is 120 W below that line. The same FAQ says a system built to run at around 90% of the rated voltage and current is safer. SolarPanelX does not rule on which panels can be added; the controller maker's specifications govern.
