How Many Amps Can an RV Lithium Battery Take From the Alternator, Shore Power, and Solar?

Summary

Using Victron products, up to 50 A from the alternator through an Orion XS 12/12-50A, 30 A from shore power through a Blue Smart IP22 12/30, and up to 30 A from solar through a SmartSolar MPPT 100/30. Putting back 80 Ah, or 80% of a 100 Ah battery, takes about 1.6 hours at 50 A and about 2.7 hours at 30 A. The solar 30 A only holds while the panels are producing enough.

The ceiling on each path

Victron lists four ways an RV battery gets charged: shore power, solar, alternator, and generator. Here are the first three with one Victron product each.

The Orion XS detects when the engine is off and stops charging, and its input current can be limited to keep the alternator from being overloaded. At low temperatures it switches off on its own to protect lithium batteries. The Blue Smart IP22 figures come from the datasheet for the 230 VAC model (180 to 265 VAC input).

Why the alternator path needs a DC-DC charger

Victron's guide says relays and diodes cannot charge modern leisure batteries to 100%, and VSR or FET isolators cannot charge lithium at all because they cannot vary their output voltage. It calls DC-DC chargers the only alternator charging device capable of charging a lithium leisure battery, and the only split-charging device that works with smart alternators, which began replacing standard ones around 2016. The Orion XS datasheet adds that Euro 5 and Euro 6 smart alternators often supply too low a charging voltage.
