How Many Solar Panels Would a 2,000-Square-Foot Home Need?
Summary
In EIA's 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey, homes of 2,000 to 2,499 square feet used an average of 12,173 kWh of electricity a year. Covering that with 430 W panels takes 22 in New York, 17 in Phoenix, and 27 in Seattle. The same survey shows Southern homes at 13,376 kWh and Northeastern homes at 8,016 kWh, a wider spread than the step from one size bracket to the next.
Electricity use by floor area
Averages from EIA's RECS 2020. Power generated by rooftop solar at the home is counted in the totals.
| Floor area, sq ft | Annual electricity use |
|---|---|
| 1,500 to 1,999 | 11,009 kWh |
| 2,000 to 2,499 | 12,173 kWh |
| 2,500 to 2,999 | 13,031 kWh |
| All U.S. homes | 10,566 kWh |
Each step up in size adds roughly 1,000 kWh. By climate, hot-humid regions average 13,781 kWh and marine climates 8,410 kWh, more than 5,000 kWh apart.
Turning 12,173 kWh into a panel count
Output per kW is from NLR's PVWatts, south-facing at a 20° tilt with 14% losses.
| City | Annual output per kW | System size needed | 430 W panels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix | about 1,755 kWh | 6.94 kW | 17 |
| New York | about 1,291 kWh | 9.43 kW | 22 |
| Seattle | about 1,088 kWh | 11.19 kW | 27 |
A 430 W Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ measures 1,722 by 1,134 mm, about 21 square feet. Twenty-two of them in New York cover roughly 462 square feet of roof before any spacing. With a year of utility bills in hand, your own annual kWh can replace the 12,173 in the division.
