Does the Price of One Solar Panel Tell You What a Home System Costs?

Summary

Not really. EnergySage estimates that panels make up only 12% of the total cost of a residential installation. For comparing quotes, the more useful number is installed price per watt, which is the total solar price divided by the system's DC capacity.

What 12% looks like in dollars

On EnergySage's $31,135 average system, 12% is about $3,700. Roughly $27,400 goes to everything other than the panels, so a cheaper module barely moves the total.

Price per watt

EnergySage's table by system size puts the average 12 kW quote at $30,720, or $2.56 per watt. That differs from the headline $31,135 because the headline average includes quotes of every size. The same table shows the per-watt price falling as systems get bigger, from $2.89 at 4 kW to $2.47 at 15 kW.

The division only works if the totals cover the same things. A quote that includes a battery or a service-panel upgrade will show a higher price per watt even when its solar portion is priced the same as a competitor's.
