What Should You Compare in Solar Quotes Besides the Total Price?
Summary
Line up what each quote actually buys: DC system size, estimated annual production, exact module and inverter models, and what work is included. Converting each total to price per watt makes quotes of different sizes comparable. If a loan is attached, put the cash price for the same system next to the loan principal, because fees built into solar loans can push the principal well above the cash price.
Two $30,000 quotes
Suppose one installer quotes $30,000 for 8 kW and another quotes $30,000 for 10 kW. Per watt, that is $3.75 against $3.00, so the second quote is cheaper even though the totals match. Pull the same details out of every proposal (size, annual kWh, model numbers, and whether a battery or service-panel upgrade is included), and the reasons behind a price gap become visible. DOE recommends having several installers assess the roof so you have something to compare.
When the loan principal exceeds the cash price
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported in August 2024 that lenders frequently fold fees, often called "dealer fees" in the industry, into the principal of solar-specific loans. Those hidden fees typically run 10 to 30 percent of the cash price and can exceed 50 percent. In the CFPB's example, a system that costs $30,000 in cash picks up a $9,000 fee, and the loan documents show a $39,000 principal. The CFPB adds that lenders do not include these fees in the total cost of credit they present to borrowers.
Stated APRs on these loans typically range from 1 to 7 percent, with terms of 8 to 25 years, according to the same report. A low APR on an inflated principal can still cost more than a higher rate on the cash price.
