Enphase IQ8X or IQ8HC: Same 384 VA, a Different Voltage Window, and Which Panels Need Which

Published · By the SolarPanelX editors · Prices and specs as of that date, from the pages under Sources

Summary

Both microinverters are rated 384 VA peak and 384 VA continuous at 240 V, both carry the same "commonly used module pairings" of 320 to 540 W, and both are covered for up to 25 years. The IQ8X exists for modules the IQ8HC cannot take: its MPPT window is 43 to 60 V with a 79.5 V maximum input, against 29.5 to 45 V and 60 V on the IQ8HC. In exchange it accepts less current, a module Isc of 13 A against 20 A, and its CEC efficiency is 96.5% against 97%. A module with a high operating voltage and a modest current, the 72-cell or large-format class, is the IQ8X's case; a high-current 60-cell-class module is the IQ8HC's.

The HC and X sheets note that labels may read 380 VA or 384 VA depending on production date, with all units certified to the same maximum. Compatibility, as our earlier guide explains, is set by the voltage and Isc limits, not by the pairing range.

Reading a module against the two windows

Take a module's Vmp and Voc from its datasheet. If Vmp falls inside 29.5 to 45 V and Voc stays under 60 V in the cold, the IQ8HC fits and its 20 A Isc limit is rarely a problem. If Vmp is above 45 V, or Voc approaches 60 V once the cold-weather correction is applied, the IQ8HC is out and the IQ8X's 43 to 60 V window and 79.5 V ceiling are the answer, provided the module's Isc is 13 A or less. The Qcells 400 W module in our pairing guide, with a Voc of 45.30 V, is a 60-cell-class case for the HC; a module with a 50 V-class Vmp is the X's.

What you give up with the X

Half a point of CEC efficiency, 7 A of Isc headroom, and the ability to swap in a high-current module later without changing the microinverter. The output is the same, so the choice is made by the module, not by the inverter's power.
